Itinerary
1. ARRIVAL AT NOUAKCHOTT
Airport pickup and transfer to hotel.
2. NOUAKCHOTT - TERJIT
The desert begins right outside of Nouakchott. We will drive about 400 Kms on a tar road to the mountains of Atar. There we will take a picturesque track into Terjit, an oasis with thermal springs and marvellous pools to bathe in. Lodging at the guest quarters in haimas (nomad tents).
3. TERJIT - ATAR - CHINGUETTI
First we will head for Atar, the capital of the Adrar region, home of the largest, most colourful market in the region with its exotic products, typical in Saharan trade. In the afternoon, we arrive in Chinguetti, the seventh holiest city of Islam, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Lodging at a guesthouse.
4.-7. CHINGUETTI - TREKKING
After breakfast in Chinguetti we’ll pick up the camels and our small caravan will start the trip though the Erg Ouarane, the enormous dune field around Chinguetti. The first evening we will arrive in Agueila, a small oasis, where we will meet the last people we’ll see for the next few days. From here after, only dunes, dunes, more dunes, and the occasional well will cross our path. We will have the chance to listen to the tremendous sounds of the singing dunes. The average walking time is 10 - 15 Km per day or four to five hours. Camping in our haima.
8. CHINGUETTI - ZARGA
We arrive back in Chinguetti in the morning and, after a well-deserved shower, we continue our trip by car. In the enchanting countryside of the Canyon of Amogjar, we will visit the prehistoric rock paintings - evidence of the former existence of elephants and giraffes in the reigon. Afterwards we will begin our crossing of the Tagant desert, sleeping near the Zarga Mountain. Camping in our haima.
9. ZARGA - CRATER OF AOUELLOUL - TENEMOUJ
After the Zarga Mountain we will visit the meteoric crater Aouelloul and the marvellous pass of Lebchir. Our track, not always evident, will lead us to the plateau of Tenemouj. Camping in our haima.
10. TENEMOUJ - AIN ZAFRA - TOUAJIL
We will cross the desert and mountains, dunes and plains, and experience the total silence of the desert until we arrive in the small village of Ain Zafra and the well of Touajil. Camping in our haima.
11. TOUAJIL - RACHID
Following an unforgettable desert crossing, we will reach Rachid, built in 1723 by the Kounta, which lies in a beautiful valley with palm trees. Camping in our haima.
12. RACHID - TIDJIKJA
After a short drive, we reach Tidjikja, a city founded in 1680 by the Moorish tribe “Idawali”. Tidjikja has a special architectural style; its buildings adorned with geometric structures. Here we will also take a ride around the largest palm grove in Mauritania. Lodging at a guesthouse.
13. TIDJIKJA - N'BEIKA - GUELTA OF MATMATA
The new tar road leads from Tidjikja until Moudjería. We will turn off in N’Beika to drive to the Guelta of Matmata, a canyon valley in which there is water all year long. Here we will see its rock paintings and the last of the Sahara crocodiles. Camping in our haima.
14. MATMATA -BOUTILIMIT - NOUAKCHOTT
At Çangrafa we will take the “Route d’Espoir”, the Road of Hope, to return to Nouakchott. The area around Boutilimit is fascinating because of the multi-coloured mountains of sand dunes. Lodging in a hotel.
15. NOUAKCHOTT
In the morning we will visit the markets and the museum. After lunch there will be enough time for a swim in the Atlantic Ocean and a visit to the bustling fishing port. At night, transfer to the airport for your flight home.

DOCUMENTS
· Passport with minimum six months’ validity
· Obligatory visa for Mauritania
· Travel insurance.
TRAVEL INSURANCE
Because we operate internationally, it is impossible for us to offer travel insurance, particularly due to the repatriation clause in the event of illness. Insurance in Mauritania is not very reliable, so we request that you purchase the obligatory travel insurance in your country of origin.
VISA

You will find Mauritanian embassies at the locations on our list of Embassies.

VACCINATION
You must only have a record of vaccination against yellow fever if you stay more than two weeks. As for other preventative measures, such as anti-malaria treatments, etc., we recommend that you contact the Foreign Health Service.
