Itinerary
1. ARRIVAL AT NOUAKCHOTT
Airport pickup and transfer to hotel.
2. NOUAKCHOTT - BOUTILIMIT - GEROU
The desert begins immediately outside Nouakchott. With its multi-coloured dunes, this soothing landscape accompanies us until after Boutilimit on “Route d’Espoir”, the road of hope. Passing through Aleg and Çangrafa, in the afternoon we arrive at the lovely oasis of Gerou. Camping.
3. GEROU - AYOUN EL ATROUS - TIMBEDRA
Shortly before reaching Ayoun el Atrous, there is an amazing rocky area, home of one of the most beautiful towns on the “Route d’Espoir”. In the afternoon we arrive in Timbedra where we set up our tents alongside the nomads. Camping.
4. TIMBEDRA
Day spent with the nomads, enjoying their enormous sense of hospitality and their fascinating simple way of life. Together with the nomads we will learn to ride camels, milk camels and goats and partake in the Mauritanian tea. Camping.
5. TIMBEDRA - NEMA - OUALATA
After this unique experience we will drive to Nema on the last stretch of tar road. From there on there will be only tracks. Oualata, although only 80 kms. away, requires 3-4 hours of travel. Lodging in a guesthouse.
6. OUALATA
Oualata is the most beautiful town in Mauritania. We will spend the day discovering its charm. In former times the city was an important centre for caravans. Today it is famous for its house paintings. It is also the home of one of the most important Koranic schools in the Islamic world in which only 20 students may study at a time. Lodging in a guesthouse.
7. OUALATA - TAGOURARET - OUJAF
Leaving the area of Sahel, we will drive along the Dhar Oualata to reach Tagouraret, where salt is still mined today. With a bit of luck we will coincide with nomads at the wells of Zgue and Oujaf as they bring their animals to water. Camping.
8. OUJAF - ENJI - ES SBA - MAKHROUGA
We will climb the mountains of Enji and enjoy the beautiful views. Later on, we will arrive to the unique landscape of Es Sba, with rock formations of up to 5 meters high. Continuing on, the most fascinating site of the day will be the Mount Makhrouga. Camping.
9. MAKHROUGA - TOUIJINET - AKREJIT - TICHIT
The well of Touijinet is surrounded with white slabs, called diatomees: fossil alga, which confirm the former presence of a lake. We will visit the town of Akreijit, probably the oldest town of Neolithic times. In the afternoon we will arrive at the caravan town Tichit. Camping.
10. TICHIT - CANYON OF BUDREISS - LEKHCHEB
We will drive through a marvellous landscape with spectacular views of the seemingly never-ending dunes of the Aouker region. We will pass the well and the rock of Zig followed by the fascinating canyon of Boudreiss. As out of nowhere, suddenly a green area appears - the fields of Lekcheb. Camping.
11. LEKHCHEB - TIDJIKJA
A short distance from Lekhcheb, strange rock formations can be observed. Passing through some small villages, we will arrive in the caravan town of Tidjikja. Lodging in a guesthouse.
12. TIDJIKJA - N'BEIKA - GUELTA DE MATMATA
After a visit of the town, we will drive along the new tar road to N’Beika. There we will get on the track to the extraordinary Guelta de Matmata. Camping.
13. GUELTA DE MATMATA
The Guelta de Matmata is a river valley like a canyon, where there are enough water pools throughout the year to allow the last of the Sahara crocodiles to survive. We will take a walking excursion to try and spot them. Camping.
14. MATMATA - MOUDJERÍA - BOUTILIMIT
We descend the pass of Achetf with its amazing views over an enormous dune field and arrive in Moudjería, a small town with some colonial buildings. From there we will drive back to the “Route d’Espoir”, where we will enjoy the hospitality of the nomads in the dunes one last time. Camping.
15. BOUTILIMIT - NOUAKCHOTT
We arrive in Nouakchott in the morning and we will visit the colourful markets and the museum. In the afternoon there will be enough time to have a swim in the Atlantic and visit the bustling fishing port. Departure in the evening.

TRAVEL INSURANCE
Because we operate internationally, it is impossible for us to offer travel insurance, particularly due to the repatriation clause in the event of illness. Insurance in Mauritania is not very reliable, so we request that you purchase the obligatory travel insurance in your country of origin.
VISA

You will find Mauritanian embassies at the locations on our list of Embassies.

VACCINATION
You must only have a record of vaccination against yellow fever if you stay more than two weeks. As for other preventative measures, such as anti-malaria treatments, etc., we recommend that you contact the Foreign Health Service.
